Assistant School Coordinator – Roxbury, MA

The Assistant School Coordinator is responsible for assisting in the daily operation of Read to a Child’s Lunchtime Reading Program, which matches business professionals with children for a rewarding read aloud experience during the children’s lunch break.

Read to a Child is a nonprofit organization that fosters a love of reading and improved literacy skills in elementary school children by inspiring adults to read to them regularly.

The Assistant Coordinator works in conjunction with the Lead Coordinator, ensuring that mentors, students, and school staff are happy and productive in the program. Specifically, s/he will assist the Coordinator with the following:

  • Ensure that opening season goes smoothly, including solicitation of teacher referrals and permission slips, matching student/mentor pairs, and assembly of start-up materials.
  • Notify students and teachers of volunteer cancellations or schedule changes.
  • Communicate with mentors, including monthly updates and changes in schedule.
  • Communicate regularly with the Lead Coordinator, including weekly updates.
  • Facilitate and monitor reading sessions to ensure smooth operation of program.
  • Support mentors with book choice and student engagement.
  • Ensure that rooms are left clean and orderly.
  • In collaboration with the Lead Coordinator, plan and execute the year-end program celebration.
  • Attend School Coordinator meetings at the Wellesley office 4 times a year
  • Facilitate other activities or tasks at the school site as requested
  • Substitute for the lead Coordinator as needed

Qualifications: 1. Communicates well in person, on the telephone, & via email; 2. Experience working with groups of children; 3. Very organized, able to prioritize and multi-task in a high-energy school environment; 4. Energetic and able to navigate 3-level building 5. Enthusiastic about children’s books and the program; 6. Comfortable working with Email, Word, and Excel.

Hours: Three days a week, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, approximately 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for the school year. Flexibility required. Also availability outside of these times for data entry, communications, and meetings as needed. 12-15 hours per week. Start February 2020

Development Coordinator – Greater Boston

Job Description

Read to a Child is seeking a Development Coordinator to support all development activities with an emphasis on grant writing, research and management, database management, and event planning and implementation. The Development Coordinator is an integral part of the Read to a Child team and should be a team player, excited to assist with all organizational needs including non-development related items.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conceive, plan, write, and edit all grant proposals and reports to support program and achieve/beat budget fundraising goals
  • Maintain grant calendar including upcoming grant deadlines, pending grant submissions, and reporting requirements
  • Maintain an accurate and up-to-date Salesforce database, including entering information regarding communications, meetings, grants submitted and received, and all relevant development activities
  • Assist in the delivery of a successful annual fundraising Gala with over 250 guests including silent auction, invitations, volunteers and ticket sales
  • Assist in the delivery of a successful Trivia Night fundraiser with over 100 guests including solicitation for in-kind donations
  • Conduct research on prospective funders including foundations, individuals and corporations
  • Collaborate with Boston Directors to cultivate strong relationships with Boston Board and all partners including foundations, individual donors, and companies

Key Qualifications

  • A passion for the Read to a Child mission
  • Grant writing and management experience
  • Donor database experience (Salesforce preferred)
  • Excellent written communication skills with an extreme attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to stay focused, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability and willingness to solicit donations on behalf of Read to a Child
  • Flexibility (position at times will require you to perform duties outside the scope of job description)
  • Experience with email, donor databases, Microsoft Office software, Google Applications
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a results-oriented, relationship-focused organization (nonprofit a plus)
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Access to car strongly preferred

Reporting and Location

The Development Coordinator will report to the Boston Director of Development.

The Development Coordinator will work from a combination of a home office and our Wellesley, MA office (20 William Street #G20, Wellesley, MA  02481).

The substitute is asked if she/he is available in the event of the School Coordinator’s absence or as an occasional assistant to the School Coordinator.

The Substitute School Coordinator will shadow the School Coordinator to learn the job. There is the option of the Brophy or Wilson School or both.

The substitute is asked if she/he is available in the event of the School Coordinator’s absence or as an occasional assistant to the School Coordinator.

The Substitute School Coordinator will shadow the School Coordinator to learn the job. There is the option of the Stanley or Whittemore School or both.

Development and Communications Intern

Position Description

The Development and Communications Intern supports the organization’s Development and Communications functions. The person in this position will work out of our Wellesley office and will report to the National VP, Development.

Responsibilities include

• Conduct prospect research; i.e., private foundation and corporate grants.
• Research and maintain media contact databases for all Read to a Child regions.
• Assist with special event planning and execution.
• Build Read to a Child’s online presence via the creation of short videos highlighting school programming and volunteer training.
• Assist with administrative, communications and additional development tasks as needed/requested.

Key Qualifications

We are seeking a high-energy Development and Communications Intern who is mission-driven and self-directed, skilled in communications, and excited to work hard for an organization at a pivotal time in its growth. Other requirements include:

• A passion for the Read to a Child mission
• Ability to plan, prioritize, and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
• Excellent written communication skills with an extreme attention to detail
• Experience creating short videos with high impact results; i.e., for fundraising and volunteer training efforts (required).
• Enrolled in a college or university working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Business, or Non-Profit Leadership.

This is a part time (12-15 hours/week), internship ideally beginning in September and staying through May, 2019. Candidate must be able to commit to a minimum of 3 hour shifts at a time. Office hours are 9am-5pm with the occasional evening event. The internship is unpaid; we are happy to coordinate with intern’s school to allow for class credit.
