About Greater Hartford’s Program

Since 1998, the Read Aloud Mentoring Program in Greater Hartford has built literacy skills and enthusiasm for reading and books in thousands of underprivileged, elementary school students.  Twenty years later, this important work continues!  Read to a Child is proud to partner adult volunteers, hailing from local corporations, businesses and community organizations, with close to 200 students for weekly read aloud sessions during the students’ lunch period.

Today, as Connecticut faces the largest achievement gap in the nation and its municipalities struggle with economic challenges, the critical need to improve literacy skills and foster a love of reading is more urgent than ever. In fact, in the city of Hartford alone, there are 7500 public school students in kindergarten through grade four, who could benefit by participating in our Read Aloud Mentoring Program.

We need your support to bring the Read Aloud Mentoring Program to ALL of these students!  In the words of a Hartford school principal, “The Lunchtime Reading Program serves our most vulnerable students, who feel school is too tough or have lost their passion for reading.  The Program and its volunteers ignite a spark in them and give them a sense of family and community beyond school walls.”

Help light that spark! Please join us – as a corporate partner, individual donor or volunteer reader!

About Detroit’s Program

In 2012, Read to a Child’s Detroit program began operating at Bow Elementary School to address the growing concerns regarding 3rd grade literacy in Metro Detroit elementary schools. After a successful test market launch, the Region has grown to support 4 schools in Detroit and Pontiac, delivering over 2500 one on one Read Aloud Mentoring Sessions since its inception.  Although we have made significant impact on the success of the students served, 3rd grade reading competency is still an area of concern for Michigan children, particularly in underserved communities.

Read to a Child Detroit is committed to building capacity which will allow us to expand our platform for community collaboration with the purpose of spreading the joy of reading to support literacy growth for children in grades K-4.  We are proud to support volunteer readers from a vast array of corporations, community organizations and civic institutions including Detroit Renaissance Lions Club, DTE Energy, FCA Automobiles, Fleishman Hillard, Level One Bank, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Quicken Loans, Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and many more.  The program is continuing to seek additional partners to expand its programming options.
