Read to a Child’s Read Aloud Mentoring Program (RAMP) pairs a volunteer mentor with an elementary school student for a rewarding weekly read aloud experience either during the child’s lunch or other non-instructional time.

The Assistant Program Coordinator assists the Program Coordinator with many aspects of the program. For reference, the Program Coordinator is responsible for the planning and the daily operation, including relationships, record keeping and scheduling, of this program at the designated school. Depending on the needs of the school, coordination of the Read Aloud Mentoring Program may be conducted in-person, virtually, or a combination thereof. The Program Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that volunteer mentors, students, and school staff have a positive and meaningful experience.

Specifically, the Assistant Program Coordinator assists the Program Coordinator with the following:

  • Ensure that the program starts smoothly, including maintaining the partnership with the school/administration (relationships, space, scheduling, absences, etc.), solicitation of teacher referrals, student permission and other start-up tasks
  • Communicate regularly with Program Coordinator and supervisor as appropriate, including weekly updates
  • Notify students, teachers and potentially parents/guardians of volunteer mentor cancellations or schedule changes
  • Assist the Program Coordinator with mentor communications and updates
  • Facilitate and monitor reading sessions to ensure smooth operation of the program
  • Ensure that state and school guidelines for hygiene and safety are followed carefully and that rooms are left clean and orderly
  • Collect surveys and assessments from volunteer mentors, students, and teachers, as needed
  • In collaboration with the Program Coordinator, plan and implement year-end celebration (in person or adapted for virtual setting), as applicable
  • Facilitate other activities or tasks as requested. Interested Assistant Program Coordinators may be able to take on some roles (virtually or in-person) at other schools
  • Attend Program Coordinator staff meetings, at the Wellesley office or virtually, 4-5 times a year
  • Submit timesheets accurately and on time
  • Substitute for the Program Coordinator as needed
  • Participate in Performance Evaluation and goal setting process

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to Read to a Child’s mission, viability and growth
  • Communicates well in-person, on the telephone & via email
  • Highly organized, able to prioritize and multi-task–with flexibility and a positive attitude
  • Enthusiastic about children’s books, willingness to become familiar with the Read to a Child book collection
  • Commitment to actively and continuously working toward achieving the organization’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion goals.
  • Comfortable working with and hosting group video conference platforms
  • Professional, positive, self-directed approach
  • Access to transportation
  • Experience working with young children is a plus

Hours: Three days a week, approximately 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. October through June. Flexibility required. Also, availability outside of these times for data entry, communications, and meetings as needed. 12-15 hours per week. Start date in September, 2022.
