Maria McGeary

Maria became involved with Read to a Child because she’s always been a huge reader and she has a passion for working with children. One of the reasons that she fell in love with the Read Aloud Mentoring Program is because it marries the aspect of mentorship and helps build those critical reading skills that help children succeed for life

Reflecting on the benefits she feels the program has on students, Maria noted, “The chance to get to know someone outside your worldview – the idea that someone is coming in who is not from your everyday life and getting to know them in the capacity of mentorship and learning to form a relationship with that person is so important and impactful to a student in their growth and development.”

What keeps Maria coming back? Work days can be stressful, your head is down and you can often develop tunnel vision. The Read Aloud Mentoring Program has been a meaningful and convenient opportunity to break up her work day with a refreshing and enriching experience with a child. According to Maria, Read to a Child “…reminds you of what is really important – the kids are so funny, sweet and wonderful. It’s an opportunity to make a true impact.”
