Since 1998, the Read Aloud Mentoring Program in Greater Hartford has built literacy skills and enthusiasm for reading and books in thousands of local students. More than twenty years later, this important work continues! Read to a Child is proud to partner with adult volunteers, hailing from local corporations, businesses and community organizations, with close to 200 students for weekly read aloud sessions during the students’ lunch period in a standard year.
Today, as Connecticut school districts grapple with learning loss, the critical need to improve literacy skills and foster a love of reading is more urgent than ever. In fact, in the city of Hartford alone, there are 7,500 public school students in kindergarten through grade four, who could benefit by participating in our Read Aloud Mentoring Program.
By partnering with our local schools, socially-minded organizations, and caring community leaders, Read to a Child Greater Hartford is working toward a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive in school and beyond through the cultivation of a lifelong reading practice.
