Metro Detroit

In 2012, Read to a Child began operating in Detroit to address the growing concerns regarding 3rd grade literacy in Metro Detroit elementary schools. The Region has grown to support 4 schools in Detroit and Pontiac, delivering thousands of one on one weekly Read Aloud Mentoring Sessions since its inception. Although we have made a significant impact on the success of the students served, 3rd grade reading competency is still an area of huge concern for Michigan children, particularly in under-resourced communities.

In speaking about their partnership with Read to a Child, Detroit Leadership Academy school Principal, Erin Wills had this to say about the Read Aloud Mentoring Program: “Read to a Child is one of the only organizations who focus on continuing relationships with students over a number of years. Not only does Read to a Child foster a love of reading, but research indicates that the number one interrupter in cycles of trauma is the consistent presence of a caring adult. Read to a Child really meets both of those needs for our students.”

By partnering with our local schools, socially-minded organizations, and caring community leaders, Read to a Child Metro Detroit is working toward a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive in school and beyond through the cultivation of a lifelong reading practice.
