Read to a Child’s Miami program began operating in 2006 and was founded by a former Boston employee who was inspired to bring the program to children in her hometown of Miami. Currently, the Read to a Child Read Aloud Mentoring Program is offered at two Miami-Dade Public Schools.
In 2022, according to the Florida Department of Education, only 39% of all 4th grade students were at or above the NAEP proficient level in reading. Additionally, in Miami, the amount of English Learners not proficient in reading rose from 87% to 93% from 2009 to 2017.
By partnering with our local schools, socially-minded organizations, and caring community leaders, Read to a Child Greater Miami is working toward a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive in school and beyond through the cultivation of a lifelong reading practice.
